Lean Design, Lean Construction
and IFC/BIM in Norwegian AEC Industry
"Come see how BIM and Lean have been integrated into a 10 year, 2 Billion USD Healthcare project in Norway from design through facility management."
Abstract:
The St. Olav Hospital project has developed its VDC process based on Lean Construction methods and Building Information Modeling (BIM). The project ambition is to model everything for use in design, construction and facility management. The project will be finished in 2013 and will used to leverage the Norwegian AEC Industry. Lean Construction methods have been applied in the project since 2006, and for the last building, BIM is implemented in all phases, from programming/design to facility management. Three topics will be presented:
1. Use of a common IFC model server in design and construction. The project, as a part of the lean planning effort, has decided that all decisions shall be based on information in an IFC model, based on the owner specified BIM manual. An important result is the capability to check that construction details meet design and program requirements before released for construction. The model is also a tool to assist in breakdown resolution.
2. How Lean Construction methods are used in the construction phase. The use of Last Planner is extended by Porsche’s TAKT Principle supported by BIM.
3. How the IFC model is enriched by life cycle/facility management information. The hospital owner has worked closely with other hospitals and Statsbygg (the Norwegian equivalent to GSA) in order to apply IFC/BIM in the whole lifecycle of a building. A status of this work will be presented.
The hospital owner (Helsebygg) and General Contractor (Veidekke) are founding members of Lean Construction Norway and active members of buildingSMART Norway. Veidekke through its Swedish subsidiary is a member of CIFE at Stanford University.
Date and Time: Wednesday, August 31, 2011 from 6-9pm
Early Registration / Cancellation Deadline: Friday, August 26, 2011. There will be no refunds after this time. Each person must register and pay to attend the meeting and dinner. Please help us save time, expense, and avoid people showing up at the last minute… plan ahead and register early!
Late Registration: Available after close of regular registration. Subject to availability.
Value Added Proposition:
Design, Construction, and Ownership team members will see the benefits of using the TAKT principle in current project management and the use of a common IFC/BIM model in their next project – from early programming through facility management.

LCI Nor Cal Community of Practice
The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
The Northern California Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI provides local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers. We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a Community of Practice to learn, share, and develop a lean community in Northern California. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
